Labrador retrievers or Labs for short are probably the most popular breed among dogs. They were primarily called as Lesser Newfoundland. Labs are friendly and very easy to train; this is the main reason as to why this breed has become well known. Labrador’s come in several coat types like fawn, black, white and auburn in general. A normal full grown lab weighs around 50 to 100 pounds.

German shepherds are also commonly known as Alsatians. These dogs are mostly used for guarding or working purposes. This is mainly because of their aggressive nature. These dogs are very strong and fearless and are also said to be very protective of their masters. Alsatian’s were used for herding sheep initially, however due to their potential these dogs are now being used in police forces and bomb squads too.

The golden retriever is also another well known breed of dog. A lot of people tend to confuse this breed with Labradors probably because of the name, but they are completely different. These dogs could be trained very easily. Golden retrievers could be great companions for children because these dogs love to play.

German Mastiff is another name for the Great Dane. These dogs are very tall in stature, even the record as the world’s tallest dog was held by a Great Dane till August ’09. Despite their appearance Great Danes are very gentle natured. These dogs need to be well trained during their puppyhood. If well trained these dogs could be good watch dogs and also a great companion to your family.

Pugs are small dogs; they normally weigh less than 20 pounds and are 12 to 15 inches long. Pugs are very adorable and loved by kids. They are highly intelligent and can be trained quite easily. Another advantage of pugs are, due to their stature you need not build a kennel for these dogs. They could easily fit in your apartment too, these dogs are obedient and will not cause too much trouble.
