Essential Tips to Stop Puppy Biting

Puppies spend most of their time playing with everything they find on their way and like biting things they can lay their mouths on as they generally use their mouths to explore the world. It is for this reason that they may start biting people including you as the owner.

In order to ensure that they do not grow to be very aggressive towards human beings, it is important to train them against this behavior using some of the following tips on how to stop puppy biting.

Bite Inhibition

This refers to the ability of a dog to control its mouthing force. Since the dog does not understand about how delicate the human skin is, they tend to bite hard even though they are playing. Most dog trainers suggest that the puppy ought to be taught how to be gentle when playing with human beings.

If you were to watch two puppies play, they always bite each other several times. If one bites the other in a hard manner, the victim usually yelps and runs away. The offender is usually taken aback because of the yelp and afterwards they continue playing. This enables them to become gentler with their bites.

Using the above instance, you should always produce an “ouch” anytime your puppy bites you hard and even walk away so that the puppy can learn how to control its biting force. You can also scold him using a stern voice but do not hit the puppy. This will startle your puppy and make it reduce its bite force.

Socialize your Puppy

You should socialize your puppy with other dogs in order for it to learn the normal behaviors of dogs. When your puppy is well socialized, it will understand that it is not supposed to bite at the very first sign of a threat. It will make the puppy be fearful at first when it meets any new person or dog and that way you will have achieved your mission.

Do not Encourage Puppy biting

You should also discourage the puppy from biting as most puppy owners do not realize that they are the ones who are responsible in making puppies bite. It is advisable to ensure that you keep away from activities that may encourage your puppy to bite things. Playing tug of war with them, chasing and wrestling can result in the dog biting you as these games highly encourage biting.

Giving the Dog a Chew Toy

When dogs are taken for obedience classes, they are trained using a chew toy as it is in their nature to bite things. Puppies especially like biting things in order to sharpen their teeth and buying them a chew toy or bone will be a wise thing to do.

You should then stop it anytime it tries to chew on furniture or bite people by offering it a chew bone instead and it will slowly learn that it is wrong to bite people or chew furniture.

All the above are some useful tips you can employ when trying to stop puppy biting. A puppy will be growing up and just like children, it should be trained on how to behave properly and this includes reducing its tendency to bite people. If these tips are followed correctly, then your puppy will be able to stop biting.
