Leash Training Your Cat
Training your pet can be a time consuming exercise. However, if one has real interest in doing so it can turn out to be a pleasurable experience. The most important thing required for an owner to train their pet is patience as our pets may not obey what we want them to do.
Cat training in particular needs extra effort. It requires more patience and dedication than dog training. But it will give us an immense sense of satisfaction once we train the cat and make them behave the way we want them to. After all, it’s a pride of every owner to have a well mannered cat and to hear people say the same as well.
To train a cat, we need to understand how cats learn. We need to make sure that whatever we ask them to do turn out to be a pleasurable experience for them. Ultimately, cats repeat if they find it interesting and enjoyable and they do not indulge in things which are not delightful to them.
So, the trick here is to make sure that whatever we want our cat to do should provide immense pleasure to our cat so that they repeat it in the future and conversely, what we do not want them to do should be unpleasant.
What’s a Lead?
A lead or a leash is a kind of rope or a material similar to that of a rope which is attached the neck or head of an animal to get control or prevent movement of the animal. Some leashes are fixed directly while some are attached to a collar or a harness.
Mostly a lead is used on a dog because they are taken out for walks. But these days it has become common to take the cats out as well. The lead helps the owner to control the movement of the cat and makes walking a pleasurable experience.
Types of Leads:
There are two types of lead:
- Standard
- Retractable
A standard lead is most commonly used as it is lighter and is about five to six feet long. Retractable leads allow the excess cord to be retracted back preventing tangles. The lead will have to be attached to a harness which is fixed on the cat’s body. Unlike dogs, cats do not like to be restrained using a lead. Hence it requires a great deal of patience to teach them to walk on a lead.
Uses of a lead:
A lead will help the owner in controlling his cat and prevent them from getting lost. They can also prevent them from biting other people or animals. They act as a great form of communication and make walking a pleasant experience.
Training the cat to walk on a lead:
Once you make the choice of the harness and the lead, keep it near your cat for several days for it to be accustomed to its appearance. After a few days, before you feed his normal meal try to slip on the harness on to your cat’s body. ‘
Immediately, feed him and also give him a few hugs for co-operating with you. Initially he will not be comfortable but distract him by playing with him. When he gets used to the harness you can remove them. Repeat this step daily leaving the harness for a longer time each day.
Next attach the lead to the harness and allow him to walk around the house. You should ensure that the lead does not get entangled with the nearby objects. As he gets comfortable shower him with praises and hugs. After this you can pick up the lead and slowly move behind him.
Repeat this exercise for a few days. After this, you can slowly pull him behind you and make him follow you. This should be done slowly and carefully as the cat might tug on to the lead. Make this exercise a pleasurable experience so that he enjoys doing this everyday.
Once he is used to this, slowly take him out for a walk in the garden. Gradually take him outdoors early in the morning to a quiet place. Slowly and gradually you will notice that you and your cat are ready to take long walks and will be the best of companions.
This exercise of training your cat to walk on a lead requires a great deal of patience as it will not happen overnight. You need to give you cat enough time to get accustomed to the process.
He should be allowed to get accustomed to it in his own pace and should not be rushed. Introducing the lead at an early age will help the cat to get accustomed to the lead in the longer run.
