Dog fleas are by far my least favorite aspect of owning a dog. I dread ever having a problem with dog fleas. Thankfully, I believe, down to following a few simple steps. This is a simple guide to ridding your home of dog fleas and preventing them ever becoming and issue.
The Simple Steps:
To naturally prevent dog fleas and ticks ever being an issue in five simple steps:
- Hoover lots, then hoover it again.
- Clean and inspect your dog regularly (and his toys and bedding).
- Groom your dog once a week/two weeks (and inspect his or her coat again with a flea comb).

- Hoover again……empty the hoover!!
Chemical or Natural?
You might be thinking how to keep your dog free from these annoying critters without relying on chemical based products or preventatives. A lot of people unknowingly pollute their home environments. They compromise the well-being of their both their pet and themselves with commercial tick and flea remedies.
Luckily, there are safe and natural options available. Naturally preventing your dog getting fleas and ticks is much better for the environment, your friends and the rest of the family.
Plan Ahead
Naturally preventing dog fleas and ticks takes a complete approach, you cannot simply treat one area and neglect another. You’ll need to consider the areas that your pet roams and lives. Basically where does he or she spend time or frequent often. For example, when your dog regularly spends time in your yard, your yard will also need treated.
Outside
For gardens, for example, the use of cedar mulch has been discussed for many years as it is a natural inspect repellent. Cedar mulch put to your garden beds are in an enclosure that your dog spends time in is a remarkable way to make a natural barrier for ticks and fleas.
The problem is that you would need to cover your entire garden. When you have a dog, it is essential to vacuum every other day, especially during tick and flea season. This is just standard practice but when you have a confirmed infestation up this to at least once a day. This will reduce the number of eggs, fleas as well as larvae in your home. After you have hoovered your home, empty the hoover into the trash outside.
Mop and clean other parts of your home so as to eliminate any critters as well as possible food sources. The above is a non-chemical based way of prevention. This is my preferred method and always will be. I call it my analogue method, hesitant to turn digital. There are of course lots of chemical based products. These include anti-flea and tick soaps, sprays, collars, medicines, even electronic gizmos that promise to deliver results, available on the market.
However, if you are worried about your dogs health, opting to natural treatment is always the best choice. If you are going to choose a chemical based product, use it sparingly and at least try the above first. Its good for you, your dog and the world we live in.
