Chemical or Natural?
You might be thinking how to keep your dog free from these annoying critters without relying on chemical based products or preventatives. A lot of people unknowingly pollute their home environments. They compromise the well-being of their both their pet and themselves with commercial tick and flea remedies.
Luckily, there are safe and natural options available. Naturally preventing your dog getting fleas and ticks is much better for the environment, your friends and the rest of the family.
Plan Ahead
Naturally preventing dog fleas and ticks takes a complete approach, you cannot simply treat one area and neglect another. You’ll need to consider the areas that your pet roams and lives. Basically where does he or she spend time or frequent often. For example, when your dog regularly spends time in your yard, your yard will also need treated.
Outside
For gardens, for example, the use of cedar mulch has been discussed for many years as it is a natural inspect repellent. Cedar mulch put to your garden beds are in an enclosure that your dog spends time in is a remarkable way to make a natural barrier for ticks and fleas.
The problem is that you would need to cover your entire garden. It’s a fantastic way to combat fleas when you dog lives in an enclosure but if you let your pet roam free at home like most of us do, then this is somewhat impractical. One important thing to remember that most infestations occur inside the home and it is there that we need to focus the most.
Inside
When you have a dog, it is essential to vacuum every other day, especially during tick and flea season. This is just standard practice but when you have a confirmed infestation up this to at least once a day. This will reduce the number of eggs, fleas as well as larvae in your home. After you have hoovered your home, empty the hoover into the trash outside.
Mop and clean other parts of your home so as to eliminate any critters as well as possible food sources. Wash all dog bedding on a frequently basis, and make sure to wash your own bedding, carpet, rugs as well as other textiles in your home. Due to the structure of this material it is a great place for dog fleas to hide and reside.
An efficient trick is to put in a touch of eucalyptus oil to the last rinse cycle each time washing bedding and linens. Although please be aware that excess use of essential oils are risky or toxic to dogs. Check out our advice on Dangers for Dogs.
Check, check then check again.
Conduct a regular tick and flea check on your pet. You can do this visually on the parts where you can see the skin. The images below give you an idea of what to look out for. Common parts for ticks and fleas on a dog’s body take account of under the legs, behind the ears, around the anus or mouth, on the belly, inside the ears as well as at the back part.
As part of your inspection and an excellent method at checking for the existence of fleas is to run a flea or tick comb through your dog’s hair. When the comb is full of small dots that seem like pepper, it is possible that your four-legged friend has fleas and ticks. Again, refer to the image below for guidance.
Dog Fleas Homemade Remedies
You can create a simple homemade dog fleas and tick spray utilizing lemon and water. If you don’t have lemon, lime is also a good option. In a pan, add 2 cups of water with a slice of lemon or lime, bring to a boil, turn off heat and then allow the mixture steep overnight.
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray to your dog’s armpit area, around the base of his tail as well as behind the ears. This is very effective in eliminating dog fleas. Tick and fleas can affect the health of your dog; therefore you must stop them from growing and forming into the next stage of their life cycle.
The above is just general tips on preventing your dog from getting dog fleas and ticks. If you are to fully eradicate a confirmed infestation, this is somewhat different. Please read this article which explains how to fully eradicate fleas and tick and also explains how and why you take certain action.
Chemical
The above is a non-chemical based way of prevention. This is my preferred method and always will be. I call it my analogue method, hesitant to turn digital. There are of course lots of chemical based products. These include anti-flea and tick soaps, sprays, collars, medicines, even electronic gizmos that promise to deliver results, available on the market.
However, if you are worried about your dogs health, opting to natural treatment is always the best choice. If you are going to choose a chemical based product, use it sparingly and at least try the above first. Its good for you, your dog and the world we live in.
